According to the Georgia Department of Transportation there were 1,531 traffic fatalities in Georgia in 2017. This does not mean that all 1,531 deceased were victims whose loved ones have viable wrongful death lawsuits. The numbers include all traffic deaths including those of at-fault drivers. This number is staggering, however, given the safety advances in vehicles in recent years. As recently as 2014 there were only 1,170 traffic fatalities statewide in Georgia. As a Gwinnett County based wrongful death and auto accident lawyer, why do I think the numbers have increased? Just to guess, here are a few possible causes:
The economy has improved.
More people are out and about driving now that gas prices have stabilized and people have more money to travel. Higher traffic volume means more traffic wrecks.
Georgia's population continues to increase.
See above. More cars on the road means more collisions.
Why should the statistics be lower?
We have all seen the TV reports about drastic reductions in DUI arrests over the last few years. However, traffic fatalities are significantly higher than several years ago. Hopefully, Uber and Lyft will soon help to reduce the number of fatalities.
Many new cars have accident prevention technology which prevents drivers from leaving their lanes when a hazard is in the next lane and some even brake to avoid rear-end collisions. Google and other companies are working on automated driving vehicles. Vehicles are also getting better collision safety features. Hopefully, in the near future technology will reduce the number of traffic fatalities.
The 2017 Georgia traffic fatality statistics demonstrate we have a long way to go to make Georgia roads safer. The people who innocently lost their lives are not statistics; they are loved ones who left us too early.
